The Military Dismount
Mounting and dismounting puts the rider in a vulnerable position, as the rider can be seriously injured if things go wrong while the rider is halfway on the horse’s back.
Practicing to develop the skills to safely mount and dismount will help ensure the athleticism required to mount and dismount without kicking or startling the horse, and the ability to settle lightly into the saddle when mounting.
The “military dismount” vaulting exercise is used to develop strength, flexibility, stamina, and confidence.
To do this, the rider presses down through the hands and arms as they lean the upper body forward and simultaneously swing both legs back, raising the entire body above the the horse’s back and then click their heels together.
This exercise enhances coordination and gymnastic development of the rider to develop the skills to properly dismount the horse. It is helpful for developing the skills to safely do an emergency dismount.
